Vagiinal ThrushVaginal thrush is a condition that affects nearly every woman at some time. It can cause severe discomfort in the way of soreness. Not to worry though as it’s a treatable condition. Some women tend to leave it till the last minute before going to a medical centre, which is hard to understand because, why put up with the discomfort allowing the infection to become more severe. The more severe an infection the longer the process to treat and cure.

Vaginal thrush is also known as yeast infection, it is an overgrowth of yeast that leads to a range of unpleasant symptoms such as itching and soreness around the vagina. No woman is exempt from getting thrush. It can also be a recurring infection, and because of this, it’s likely to affect the woman’s sex life.

Thrush is caused by the presence of yeast in the body which grows out of control. This yeast is nearly always Candida albicans, but, there is another more resistant yeast called Candida glabrata which can also be why thrush happens.

It’s not just women that carry yeast in their bodies, men, and children also. This type of yeast usually thrives in the intestines, vagina, and the oral region, and skin, where a ‘friendly’ bacterium helps to keep the yeast levels low. When this balance is disturbed and the yeast is allowed to grow it is then when problems in the body occur.

The vagina is the commonest part of the body thrush affects. Although the vagina is generally too acidic for yeast to grow out of control, it is sensitive to small changes and can easily become a suitable environment for yeast growth. Too much yeast irritates vaginal tissue, therefore, causing thrush symptoms. Signs to look out for are itching, burning sensation, soreness and swelling of the vagina and vulva (outer area of the vagina) and likely a smelly discharge. Just because you experience these signs does not indicate that it is thrush. Other vaginal infections can also cause itchiness and soreness too. Vaginal thrush can cause one or more symptoms ranging from mild to severe.

When thrush is present it will irritate the delicate tissue of the vagina making it sore, swollen and red. If there is itch then scratching will only make the problem worse. A major sign to look out for is a change in vaginal discharge. The amount you lose, it’s colour, smell and thickness or texture. These changes usually say infection is present, but which infection it is, is up to the doctor to say whether it is or isn’t.
